Question by J@HG: What refrigerant is used in new dehumidifiers?

I want to replace my old dehumidifier (20-years old) with an energy star model in an effort to save electricity. I have tried to find information on what refrigerant the old one uses vs. what a new model would use, but am just getting frustrated trying to get the information online.

Does anyone know what causes the new models to be more energy efficient, if the refrigerant in an old dehumidifier is dangerous, and approximately how much energy I can expect to save per month?

Newer units have improved compressors and improved coils for better heat transfer. Its not the refrigerant.They haven’t really improved the refrigerant other than making it o zone friendly.
The old dehumidifier has refrigerant that needs to be reclaimed to prevent loss into the environment.
