actually air conditioners ARE dehumidifiers, you just need more air conditioners. they blow hot air outside. the stand alone dehumidifiers don’t and you will have to find a way to empty the water that’s left behind. that’s the dehumidifiers job, get the water out of the air. think about it.

Dehumidifiers don’t freeze (if they’re working properly), so no, they don’t defrost.
Water condenses on the cold coils and runs into a hose or bin.

How is that water supposed to be removed from the machine? If it’s a hose, you have a clog or leak. If it’s a bin, you have a leak.

Even if it did freeze, when it thawed, the water should run into the bin.

EDIT: Possible problems
The bin is not placed correctly.
You have a leak in the bin.
The auto shutoff is not working when the bin fills up.
The water’s not running correctly into the bin. Is it out of level? Turn on the unit with the bin removed, depress the safety switch and wait until water starts dripping.

A dehumidifier will help you feel less clammy and sweaty, but I don’t think it’d make a complete substitution. Air conditioners also dehumidify the air.

They have new air conditioners that only use a small port that vents to outside, and don’t require window installation. These are not cheap, but if you value your window space, it’d be a neat thing to have.

I checked Consumer Reports b4 I bought mine. They didn’t have a lot of valuable info in this area, but did list some of the features that should be considered. My basement is too damp to be “finished”, so I needed a pretty good one. I bought a Haier, & have been pretty pleased w/it, but it was a little pricey, I thought. Some of the features that you might want to be sure to have include: casters/wheels, Auto setting, hose/or ability to connect one(so you don’t have to empty the holding tank, also a long (electrical) cord is a big plus, & it should be quiet while running…

We have a townhouse, (2 floors of living space and a basement) in NYC and use only window a/c. Would a dehumidifier help? I know that reducing the humidity will help the air feel cooler, but will the cost of running the unit outweigh the benefits?

If you are comfortable with just the window units, I would not use a de-humidifier. The window units should do a fairly good job with the humidity. Running the de-humidifier will run your electric bill up. Try using some circulating fans. I keep my thermostat on 80 and use ceiling fans. Works great for me.

I want to buy one for my friend as he has a very slight problem with a small puddle forming from time to time in his basement.

I just checked mine…its a 300 dollar whirlpool…the knob does have a more dry/ less dry/ continuous run knob…it also has a drain pan that you can connect a hose to, and just have it go into a drain, and never have to mess with it.
I spent too much for this stupid thing, check walmart when the humid weather is about to start.

I understand that dehumidifiers are basically refrigeration cycles. They have a compressor that goes to a condenser and then an evaporator. What I’m wondering is if home dehumidifiers have an expansion valve. How does the fluid get from hi pressure back down to low? Is that energy lost through the condensation process on the evaporator?

A dehumidifier is very similar to an air conditioner, though it may be smaller. The idea is to cool the air below dew-point, so the water vapour is drawn off as condensate. The whole room isn’t cooled below dew point, just the air passing the evaporator. As the air in the room continually passes through the evaporator, the water vapour is gradually removed. The unit is a heat pump. It pumps heat from the air it is cooling into the outside air, using energy to operate the pump. Internally, yes there is some sort of expansion valve. Typically it takes about one third of the energy in the heat pumped outside to operate the pump. I guess some of this heat could be recovered by using it to heat water.

Air conditioners dehumidify too, as the evaporator is usually below dew point at around 5 degrees C. The condensate is drained to the outside. If there are clouds of vapour in front of the evaporator that is because the capacity is high enough that the air in front is chilled, so condensation takes place in the chilled air around the evaporator, not just on the evaporator surface.
