Question by John: Dehumidifiers vs air conditioners in energy consumption?

Do dehumidifiers consume roughly the same amount of energy as an air conditioner on average? yes i realize that they both come in different sizes/BTU’s etc. And if air conditioners consume more energy.. about how much more? I am asking this because i currently run a dehumidifier in my garage during the summer and if i read the label correctly, it uses 1.8kw per hr and i was wondering how much more it would cost to run an air conditioner instead.. such as when i am working. thanks for your help!!

I’m paraphrasing what my dad’s saying – he’s manager of the appliance division for my line of work, but he’s done a lot of work with heating and cooling as well.

The air conditioner is going to pull out more moisture and cool out the garage. If the garage is smaller it would be better to get the dehumidifier, and average to large the air conditioner would be the best choice.

Question by ber: Would two “low pint” dehumidifiers be equivilent to a “high pint” one?

I was wondering because I need a 65 pint dehum, but I can get a 40 pint and a 25 pint at a much cheaper cost. But would it be the same?

According to Consumer Reports, the LG LHD45EL and the Kenmore 54501 models are the best buys for the medium-capacity. I’ve read reviews on both and still cannot figure out which is better. Anyone have experience with either of these? Or any other model? Serious answers only.

Indeed, these two units are of the best obtainable. However, I’m a true believer in Sears & what they have to offer. From all of my past experiences with them, I’ve had nothing but positive results with them warrantying their products and/or merchandise.

Fantastic! I had an old brown one too, tossed it. Get a new one that is energy star rated. Get one with the options you never had like 2, 4 or 6 hour interval timers and an option to select the humidity % you want, not just on / off. This elimenates freeze up of the coil on the back, too. And they are nice and quiet.

actually air conditioners ARE dehumidifiers, you just need more air conditioners. they blow hot air outside. the stand alone dehumidifiers don’t and you will have to find a way to empty the water that’s left behind. that’s the dehumidifiers job, get the water out of the air. think about it.
